In a previous post, we discussed the significance of the Sun and its awareness in our consciousness. In this blog, we will now move onto the planet Mercury, which works with the awareness symbolised by the Sun, enabling us to communicate what we are aware of and bring it into physical form. And yes, the phrase “Mercury Retrograde” (which we’ll talk about in another post) you commonly hear about basically means “It is difficult to communicate and process information at this point in time.”
How We Experience Mercury
Mercury represents our inner desire to communicate, think, and understand the world around us. Present in our everyday lives, Mercury influences all our thought processes, communication methods, and problem-solving abilities—whether positive or negative. In short, Mercury guides how we process information, form thoughts, and convey them to others, deeply impacting our cognitive functions and interpersonal interactions.
What Mercury Represents
The Yin and Yang side of Mercury - Virgo and Gemini
In life, the polarity of Yin and Yang applies everywhere around us, and it certainly applies to our consciousness of Mercury. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. In Gemini, the Yang side of Mercury, it fosters quick, adaptable thinking and versatile communication. In Virgo, the Yin side of Mercury, it promotes analytical, detail-oriented thinking and practical communication. These traits align with psychological theories of personality and cognitive function, illustrating how Mercury's energy manifests in different ways.
Gemini the Communicator - Mercury’s Yang Side
Suppose you feel inspired to write a story or a blog post. Mercury drives your desire to gather information, research, and start writing. This motivation represents Mercury's influence in our lives, encouraging us to act on our desire for expression and understanding. In psychological terms, this reflects our cognitive motivations and intrinsic drive for intellectual engagement and creative output.
Virgo the Problem Solver - Mercury’s Yin Side
Let's say you need to solve a complex problem at work. You feel motivated to research, analyse data, and communicate your findings to your team. This desire to understand and solve problems is driven by Mercury, pushing us to engage in intellectual activities and communicate our insights effectively. Mercury embodies our critical thinking and problem-solving skills, essential for navigating complex situations.
My Personal Experience with Mercury
Throughout my career and education, I've experienced Mercury's influence firsthand. In a job that required constant problem-solving and communication, my need to understand issues and convey solutions pushed me to act. During my school days, my desire to excel in studies led me to diligently research and understand subjects better. These experiences highlight Mercury's role in fostering cognitive development and enhancing our analytical abilities.
Connecting with Your Own Mercury
You can connect with your Mercury energy by understanding its house and sign placement in your birth chart. If you have your natal chart ready (this can be calculated online from www.astro.com), your Mercury can be found by house and sign.
Mercury House Placement
Each house in the natal chart (there are a total of 12) dictates a specific area of life. Having Mercury in a particular house indicates that this area will impact your Mercury the most. For example, if you have Mercury in your 3rd house, you will connect with Mercury through daily interactions, learning, and sharing information. You could also say that regularly engaging in social and intellectual environments will help you be more in tune with your Mercury.
Mercury Sign Placement
The sign your Mercury is placed in shows how you tune into it effectively. For example, if your Mercury is in the sign of Cancer, your way of tuning into it involves using your intuition and “gut feel.” In the same example, while engaging in social and intellectual environments, you communicate well by first getting a feel for the other person or the situation and then responding based on that gut feeling.
When Your Mercury is Healthy and Active
Below are certain traits indicating when your Mercury is functioning well and when it is not. Take a moment to go through each column and reflect on it to see when and where your Mercury may be functioning as it should.

Understanding Mercury: From Non-Functional to Functional Thinking
Now, you might be thinking, “Why do I need to reflect?! I know what Mercury is. I can just watch another YouTube video to learn more!” Well, sometimes that works, but to truly leverage your Mercury energy and make it work for you, reflection and introspection are the first steps. Otherwise, it will just be “Oh, that's interesting!” and then forgotten.
Sometimes, our Mercury energy isn’t working in our favor. To go from non-functional to functional thinking, we need to first understand and acknowledge how Mercury operates in our lives. As the saying goes, “You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge.”
Start by reflecting on the following:
If you know your Mercury placement, ask yourself:
How does Mercury’s house placement influence my way of thinking? For example, if your Mercury is in your 4th house, consider how family and early experiences have shaped your communication style—for better or worse.
What does the sign of Mercury reveal about my thought process? For example, if your Mercury is in the sign of Aries, you may think quickly and get straight to the point. Reflect on when this approach has been helpful or unhelpful for you.
If you don’t know your Mercury placement, you can still tune into your Mercury by asking yourself:
How can I become a better communicator? Reflect on how you can improve both your listening and speaking skills. When were there times you communicated effectively, and when were there times it wasn't as good?
How do I currently solve problems, and what can I do to enhance my problem-solving abilities?
