What Astrology Is, What It Isn’t, and What It Could Be Costing You

For many people, astrology has often been seen as a trend or a craze. For instance, have you ever heard someone say, “He’s like that because he’s a Gemini,” or “I can’t stand Scorpios, they’re nasty”? It also goes the other way, with remarks like, “All Aries are angry,” when in fact, they are all different. To me, these statements highlight the misunderstanding and ignorance surrounding astrology. A good example of this occurred in a dating show I watched the other night. One person asked what the other’s sun sign was, and when they responded, they were immediately turned off because the sign didn’t meet their approval.
I thought to myself, this simplistic and judgmental way of thinking could prevent a potential relationship from flourishing. I’ve met couples who have completely different or opposing sun signs, yet they still share a deep connection.
This brings me to my point: astrology is much more than just our sun signs. While the trend of focusing on the "sun, moon, and rising" signs adds more depth, it still doesn’t fully encapsulate the individual or what they can bring to a relationship. Additionally, an individual’s personal history plays a significant role. Their relationships, family upbringing, and evolving opinions shape their perceptions over time, so these factors also need to be considered. If you really want to understand someone through astrology, you need to look beyond their sun sign and examine their entire birth chart. Their transits and progressions (the planetary energies affecting them in real time) also play a significant role.

There's more to astrology than what we've been told—beyond sun signs lies a universe of deeper insights.
Now Let’s Look at What Astrology Actually Is:
Apart from the sun sign everyone talks about, as well as the rising and moon signs, the natal chart consists of 12 houses, 12 signs, and 10 planets. In addition to this, we also have important points, such as the IC, the Descendant, and the Midheaven. There are also aspects (the angles between planets), planetary placements (the condition of the planets in each sign and house), and even Lots (calculated points).
In simple terms, let’s break these down:
The Houses: Represent different areas of life the individual experiences.
The Planets: Symbolize the psychological archetypes that make up our psyche.
Points: Key parts of the chart that have a strong influence.
Lots: Calculated points that describe difficult circumstances or conditions for the individual.
The Signs: Represent how the planets, points, or even Lots express their nature.
How It All Comes Together:
When we consider how relationships work, we must examine:
The ruling house of relationships
The ruling sign
The ruling planets
The aspects
Other factors that may influence these
This precise information comes together like a puzzle, creating a clearer picture of what the client’s relationship life is likely to be.
Based on this, we can conclude that sun signs alone cannot define the personality of a potential partner. Even if they could, there are ways to make a relationship work with persistence and good intentions, provided both individuals are committed to that connection.
If I were to leave you with anything, it would be this: Be mindful that astrology is a much more complex orchestration of energies than a simplistic label based on sun signs alone. Don’t reduce people to 12 pigeonholed categories.
